With a Bachelor’s Degree in Pharmacy and a Master in Biomedical Informatics and Medical Statistics, Gergis ABDALLA is a PhD student with a diverse background in pharmacy practice, marketing & clinical research, data management, and development of decision support systems. His Master’s research consisted of developing and piloting an electronic clinical decision support application for the Egyptian version of the integrated management of childhood illness guideline. His PhD project will develop and implement tailored adherence algorithms in the R package AdhereR for integration in the Scottish Therapeutics Utility. STU is a computer programme currently used in primary care in the NHS Scotland for monitoring and improving prescribing at practice level. Integrating accurate and user-friendly ‘at a glance’ adherence assessments would encourage discussion of potential difficulties in taking medication as prescribed, and consequently improve health outcomes of persons living with chronic conditions.
